At Cutting Technologies, we regularly produce precision laser cut stainless steel components for customers across the UK, from one-off prototypes and small batches through to larger repeat production runs.
The components pictured are a great example of a typical Cut-Tec project: 3mm stainless steel, precision laser cut and marked at our Barnsley facility, with folding managed through one of our trusted subcontract partners.
For customers, that means one supplier capable of managing the complete requirement โ while our in-house nitrogen generation helps us remain particularly competitive when it comes to stainless steel laser cutting.
Precision Laser Cutting of 3mm Stainless Steel
Stainless steel is widely used across engineering and manufacturing thanks to its combination of strength, durability, corrosion resistance and appearance.
When it comes to laser cutting 3mm stainless steel, modern fibre laser technology allows components to be produced quickly and accurately, with excellent repeatability across both small and large production runs.
At Cut-Tec, our fibre laser cutting capacity enables us to process stainless steel efficiently while maintaining the quality our customers expect.
Whether the requirement is for simple profiles or more detailed components featuring holes, slots, cut-outs and identification marking, we can work directly from customers' CAD drawings to produce parts ready for the next stage of manufacture.
Why We Use Nitrogen for Stainless Steel Laser Cutting
For high-quality stainless steel components, the assist gas used during laser cutting makes a significant difference.
At Cut-Tec, stainless steel is typically laser cut using nitrogen, which allows us to achieve a clean, high-quality cut without the oxidised edge associated with oxygen-assisted cutting.
This makes nitrogen laser cutting particularly well suited to stainless steel components where edge quality and appearance matter or where the parts will undergo further manufacturing processes.
There is, however, one drawback to nitrogen: it can be expensive.
That's where Cut-Tec has an important advantage.
Our Own Nitrogen Generation Helps Keep Costs Down
Rather than relying entirely on bought-in nitrogen, Cut-Tec has invested in our own on-site nitrogen generation system at our Barnsley facility.
Producing nitrogen ourselves helps reduce one of the significant consumable costs associated with stainless steel laser cutting.
For our customers, that's important.
Lower processing costs allow us to offer highly competitive stainless steel laser cutting prices, particularly on repeat orders and larger-volume production where nitrogen consumption can otherwise have a considerable impact on the overall price.
It also gives us greater control over an essential part of our laser cutting operation.
Laser Cutting with Folding โ One Managed Service
Many components don't finish their journey when they leave the laser.
The 3mm stainless steel parts pictured, for example, also require precision folding to create the finished component.
Although folding isn't carried out in-house at Cut-Tec, we can manage this operation through our trusted specialist subcontract partners as part of the complete order.
This gives customers the convenience of dealing with Cut-Tec for the complete requirement rather than arranging laser cutting with one supplier, transporting the components elsewhere and then managing a separate folding company.
We take care of the process and supply the finished components.
From CAD Drawing to Finished Stainless Steel Component
Combining our in-house laser cutting expertise with carefully managed secondary operations allows us to offer customers much more than simply flat laser-cut profiles.
A typical project can include CAD processing, material supply, fibre laser cutting, component identification or marking and subcontract folding, with Cut-Tec managing the job from the initial enquiry through to delivery.
For purchasing teams and engineers, this can help simplify the supply chain, reduce administration and provide a single point of contact for the finished component.
